June 15 to 19, 2020
The Philippine educational system is undeniably one of the most affected social institutions by the COVID-19 pandemic. With the vaccine still being developed, the familiar educational set up of doing physical classes, fieldwork, research and extension activities will be significantly limited unless there is an immediate adaptation to change. The School of Graduate Studies (SGS), in the hope of discussing what these changes might be, collaborated with the Center for Partido Studies, Partido Institute of Economics, Museo de Isarog, College of Arts and Sciences, Office of the University President, Office of the Board Secretary, and PASFECUPP student volunteers to provide a week-long online conversation with the theme “Situating the New Normal of Advanced Education in Bicol.”
The recent Balongibog Talks segment focused on issues faced by advanced education in the Bicol region amidst the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the CHED Memorandum number 15, series of 2019. In her segment opening speech, the SGS Dean, Dr. Bernadette Gumba, explained the importance of continuing and enhancing quality education in graduate schools despite the pandemic, at the same time adjusting to the new normal. “Graduate schools are called upon to go beyond merely granting master’s and doctor’s degrees to candidates. Our courses and programs should produce graduates who will contribute to the development of their respective disciplines, advancement of the sciences, and more importantly, improvement of the quality of life..,” Dr. Gumba said.
The five lectures of the week were delivered by faculty members of the SGS. The first lecture, “Challenges and Opportunities in Graduate Science Education,” was given on June 15, 2020 by Dr. Maria Wendy Solomo. Looking at education in the global scope, Dr. Mariel Estrella delivered a lecture on “Teacher Education Amidst COVID Pandemic: Reshaping the Landscape in Education” on June 16, 2020.
A lecture on local government responses during the COVID-19 pandemic with the title “Public Administration and Local Governance Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic” was given by Assistant Professor Charlie Balagtas on June 17, 2020.
Two lectures highlighting doing research in the “New Normal” were held on June 18 and 19, 2020. A lecture on “Possibilities & Opportunities for Graduate Research in the New Normal” was delivered by Dr. Gumba, while the Director of PARSU Statistics Center, Ms. Yumi Vivien De Luna, gave a lecture on “What’s the Big Deal? A Talk on Examining Big Data Analytics.”
The five lectures were moderated by Liezel D.C. Atole and Vanessa Mae C. Romero of the College of Arts and Sciences, Rolan Jon G. Bulao of the Partido Institute of Economics, and Earl John C. Hernandez of the Museo de Isarog.
