In a bid to enhance the capabilities of health researchers in the Bicol region, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Bicol Consortium for Health Research and Development (BCHRD), in collaboration with Partido State University and Philippine Genome Center (PGC) Mindanao, conducted a specialized training titled "Introduction to Genomics: Tools and Techniques for Health Researchers" on June 25β26, 2025, at ParSU Goa campus.Β
The two-day training provided faculty researchers from various State Universities and Colleges and BCHRD member institutions with foundational knowledge and hands-on skills in genomics, including DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques, and data analysis, equipping researchers with the competence to apply molecular biology techniques in their respective fields and enabling them to pursue locally relevant and globally competitive health research.Β
The training featured experts from PGC Mindanao's Omics Laboratory Services, including Ms. April Mae M. Numeron and Ms. Diadem R. Ricarte, who facilitated theoretical and hands-on sessions. Topics included the Principles of Molecular Biology and Genomics Workflow and Laboratory Exercises on Sample Preparation, DNA Extraction, Spectrophotometer and Agarose Gel Electrophoreses run, Endpoint PCR Run, and Real-time PCR Run for the first day.Β
On the second day, participants conducted a PCR Amplicon Quality Check, RT-PCR Run Data Analysis, and PCR Amplicon Gel Purification, followed by an open forum and discussion about Troubleshooting of Equipment where DIAMED and Medical Test Systems, Inc. representatives presented relevant laboratory technologies and equipment.Β
Participants in the training came from a wide range of academic and research institutions, including ParSU, Ateneo de Naga University, Bicol Regional Hospital and Medical Center, Camarines Norte State College, Catanduanes State University, Central Bicol State University of Agriculture, DOST Regional Office V, Universidad de Sta. Isabel de Naga, Inc., and the University of Saint Anthony.Β
As a University of Science and Technology, the activity reinforces ParSU's leadership in academic and research collaboration that unites higher education institutions, research consortia, and industry stakeholders in pursuit of scientific innovation and community impact.Β
